Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph displays the information about the number of people who visit Caryl Island and returning visitors from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that from 2000 to 2006, both the first-time visitors and the people who are revisiting this place increased throughout the period. The number of the first-time visitors decreased for the first two years, while the proportion of the returning visitors increased. This trend got inverted in the last two years.

However, in 2000, 8000 people had visited Carly Island, while only 3000 people were visiting more than once. After 2 years, the returning visitors suddenly increased by 7000, reaching a point of 10000, whereas new visitors decreased to half at the same time. Two years later, this got some popularity; 6000 new faces landed on this island, while almost 11500 had recently visited.

In addition, in 2006 this island became the most popular, where it had 10000 new visitors, while returning visitors surged, reaching the peak of 15000. Then in 2008, returning visitors decreased by 2000, falling to 13000. On the other hand, new visitors had constant growth, reaching just below 12000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and key features of the graph, such as the overall growth and the peak in 2006. You have also made relevant comparisons between the two categories. However, there are some inaccuracies in your data reporting. For instance, you mention that in 2000, 8000 people visited, but the graph shows 12,000 for first-time visitors. Additionally, stating that returning visitors 'suddenly increased by 7000' in two years is slightly imprecise based on the visual data. To reach a higher band, ensure that your data points are read more precisely and that your summary of trends is consistently supported by the figures provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'In addition' to guide the reader through the information. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of time periods (e.g., 'After 2 years') could be more fluid. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is grouped logically by time periods, which helps the reader follow the development of the trends.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the trends, using terms like 'surged', 'peak', 'constant growth', and 'proportion'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'new faces landed on this island' and 'this got some popularity', which are slightly informal or imprecise for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding informal phrasing. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The number of the first-time visitors decreased for the first two years, while the proportion of the returning visitors increased.' While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'this island became the most popular, where it had 10000 new visitors' (which is slightly awkward), these errors do not impede communication. Your control of tense is generally consistent, and punctuation is used effectively to separate clauses.
