Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the information of the number of first-time visitors and the returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, it can be observed that the number of the returning visitors increased gradually and remained higher than the first-time visitors from 2002. The number of the new visitors slightly decreased till 2000, then it experienced a steady growth, creating an elbow-shaped pattern.
However, looking at the visitors who saw the island for the first time. In 2000, 8,000 people visited the island, which then decreased by half of that in 2002. The graph then recovered from the fall, concluding at 6,000 in 2006. Then first-time visitors increased significantly throughout the period surveyed, reaching the peak at 12,000.
On the other hand, coming to the returning visitors, 3,000 people again visited the island in 2000. In 2002, there was a drastic growth of 7,000, concluding at 10,000. After two years, it then rose to 12,000. In 2006, it reached an all-time high, touching the point of 15,000, but then it slightly decreased, falling to the figure of 13,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered both categories (first-time and returning visitors) and made relevant comparisons, such as noting that returning visitors remained higher from 2002 onwards. However, there are some inaccuracies in your data reporting. For instance, you mention a decrease in first-time visitors 'till 2000', but the graph starts at 2000. Additionally, the description of the 'elbow-shaped' pattern is slightly confusing, and the final figure for first-time visitors is stated as 12,000, which is not clearly supported by the graph's end point. Ensuring precise data transcription is essential for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two categories. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in the narrative. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is mostly effective, though the sentence 'However, looking at the visitors who saw the island for the first time' is a sentence fragment that disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring all sentences are grammatically complete would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'gradually', 'steady growth', and 'all-time high'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'illustrates the information of the number of'. The use of 'elbow-shaped' is an interesting attempt at descriptive language, but it is not a standard term for trend analysis. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and avoid redundant phrasing. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'the number of the returning visitors' contains an unnecessary article, and 'decreased by half of that in 2002' is slightly ambiguous. There are also issues with prepositional usage and sentence fragments, such as the one starting with 'However, looking at...'. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally easy to follow, and the errors do not significantly impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would help you reach a higher band.
