Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the number of first-time visitors and the returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, it can be observed that the number of the returning visitors increased gradually and remained higher than the first-time visitors from 2002. The number of the new visitors slightly decreased till 2002, and then it experienced steady growth, creating a V-shaped pattern.
However, looking at the first-time visitors. In 2000, 8,000 people visited the island, which then decreased by half of that in 2002. The graph then recovered from the fall, concluding at 6,000 in 2006. Then first-time visitors increased significantly throughout the period surveyed, reaching just below 12,000.
On the other hand, coming to the returning visitors, 3,000 people revisited the island in 2000. In 2002, there was a drastic growth of 7,000, concluding at 10,000. After two years, it then rose to 12,000. In 2006, it reached an all-time high, touching the point of 15,000, but then it slightly decreased, falling to the figure of 13,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all requirements of the task. You have identified the main trends for both categories and provided relevant data points to support your descriptions. The overview is clear and highlights the key differences between the two visitor types. However, there is a minor inconsistency in your reporting: you mention the first-time visitors reached 'just below 12,000' at the end of the period, but the graph shows the period ending in 2008, where the figure is clearly 12,000. Additionally, the description of the 'V-shaped pattern' is a good analytical observation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points cited are perfectly aligned with the visual information provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on each visitor type. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You make good use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in focus. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different categories. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; for example, the phrase 'However, looking at the first-time visitors' is a bit fragmented. Integrating these into full, flowing sentences would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'steady growth', 'drastic growth', and 'all-time high' are used appropriately to describe the trends. There is some minor repetition of 'number of' and 'visitors', but this does not impede communication. You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, which is good. To improve, try to vary your verbs and nouns further to avoid repetitive phrasing, and ensure that collocations are always natural, such as using 'experienced a significant rise' instead of 'there was a drastic growth of'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically accurate. There are a few minor errors, such as 'the number of the returning visitors' (the article 'the' is unnecessary here) and 'decreased by half of that in 2002' (which is slightly ambiguous). Punctuation is generally handled well. To move to a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring that articles are used consistently and correctly. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which is a strong foundation.
