Student answer (Band 8.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of new and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, the number of first time visitors observed a sharp decline in the starting period whereas the trend followed an upward pattern for the rest of the period. In addition, the figures for returning visitors increased considerably before reaching peak in 2006 which was followed by a slight downfall in the last year.

In 2000, Caryl welcomed 8000 new comers visiting the island first time before this number fell to a dip of only 4000 people visiting in 2002. However, these numbers increased gradually over following years reaching maximum of approximately 12000 visitors in 2008.

On the other hand, the figures of second time visitors surged from 3000 people in 2000 to 15000 people in 2006 before observing a decline of around 2000 visitors in 2008. Interestingly, the two lines crossed the path in 2001 welcoming same number of 6000 new and second time visitors during this period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and key features of the graph. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the graph, such as the peak in 2006 for returning visitors and the intersection point in 2001. The response covers all parts of the task well. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use precise terminology; for example, describing the 2002 point as a 'dip' is good, but ensure all data points are clearly linked to the years provided. Your ability to compare the two categories throughout the report is a strong point.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'On the other hand' effectively to guide the reader through the data. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the general trends to specific data points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two categories of visitors. To improve further, ensure that referencing is always precise; for instance, 'during this period' could be more specific to avoid any ambiguity regarding the timeline.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'sharp decline', 'upward pattern', 'increased considerably', and 'surged'. These choices are appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'new comers' (should be one word: 'newcomers') and 'crossed the path' (a more natural collocation would be 'intersected' or 'crossed'). However, these do not impede communication. Using a slightly wider variety of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over tense is generally accurate for describing past data. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'reaching peak' (should be 'reaching a peak') and 'visiting the island first time' (should be 'for the first time'). These are rare and do not affect the clarity of your writing. To improve, focus on article usage (e.g., 'the' before 'maximum') and consistent preposition use.
