Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the trends for both first-time and returning visitors. However, the summary is somewhat repetitive, as the information is presented in the body paragraphs and then partially restated in the conclusion. While the key data points are identified, the comparison between the two groups could be more analytical. For instance, noting that returning visitors overtook first-time visitors early in the period would have strengthened the response. The overview is present but lacks a clear synthesis of the overall trends, which is necessary for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as the use of 'while' and 'afterward' to connect clauses. The flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between the two visitor types feels abrupt. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not effectively tie the information together, as it repeats some of the earlier observations rather than providing a concise summary of the main trends.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a reliance on basic verbs like 'increased', 'decreased', and 'reach'. Phrases such as 'lowest peak' are logically confusing, as a peak usually refers to a high point. There are also some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'returning visitors were more initially'. To improve, you should incorporate a wider range of synonyms for movement and change, and ensure that your terminology accurately reflects the data presented in the graph.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect clarity. Issues include missing articles (e.g., 'the returning visitors'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'first time visitor were'), and punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying on simple 'subject-verb-object' patterns. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation would significantly improve the quality of your writing.
