Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given graph illustrates the number of visitors and return visitors in Caryl Island over eight years.

Overall, the number of visitors fluctuated over the period, also declined and surged too. Similarly, the return visitors number was continuously increasing but fluctuated and decreased in 2006.

As the matter of fact, the graph gives data about the tourist in eight years. The first time visitors number in 2000 was at 8000 but linearly decreased till 2000. The worthwhile point in this is that in 2001 both lines intersect each other about at six thousand, while it again regain its strength and increased steadily and reached its peak of 12000 in the year of 2008.

The count of return visitors initially was approximately at 3000 and steadily increased and touched 10000 in just two years, the figure constantly increased and spiked and crossed 14000 in the year of 2006. Consequently, it was its highest point, in this while this figure gradually decreased and in 2008 that figure falls approximately above thirteen thousand but remained below fourteen thousand.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided data points to support your description. You covered both categories of visitors and included a comparison regarding the intersection point in 2001. However, the overview is slightly confusing; stating that the number of visitors 'declined and surged too' is vague. To improve, ensure your overview clearly highlights the most significant trends, such as the overall growth in both categories by the end of the period. The data reporting is generally accurate, though some specific figures (e.g., 'linearly decreased till 2000') contain minor inaccuracies regarding the timeline or terminology.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'Similarly', and 'Consequently' to link ideas. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'As the matter of fact' and 'in this while'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal structure of the second paragraph could be improved by grouping the data more logically rather than jumping between years. Referencing is mostly clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'steadily increased', and 'peaked'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'regain its strength' (which is more appropriate for a person than a line graph) and 'the figure constantly increased and spiked'. There are also minor errors in phrasing, such as 'the return visitors number' instead of 'the number of returning visitors'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations for describing trends and graphs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the return visitors number was continuously increasing' (should be 'the number of returning visitors'), 'the first time visitors number... decreased till 2000' (should be 'the number of first-time visitors'), and 'in this while this figure gradually decreased'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and prepositional phrases will help improve your score.
