Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered both categories of visitors and highlighted key points such as the starting figures, the intersection, and the final values. However, the analysis could be improved by ensuring more precise reporting of the data points. For instance, stating that figures 'merged at some time in 2001' is slightly vague; identifying the approximate value would be more analytical. Additionally, ensure that the data reported is accurate to the graph provided. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task well, providing a logical summary of the information presented in the line graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two categories of visitors. The progression of ideas is generally smooth. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', and 'As for', to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise. For example, 'it witnessed' in the second paragraph lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to the intended subjects would help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuating trend', 'surged significantly', and 'upward trend'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'achieving a higher spot' (which is informal) and 'went downhill' (which is idiomatic rather than academic). Additionally, there are minor errors like 'new-comers' (usually one word) and 'i the island' (a typo). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are consistently formal and appropriate for a report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'reported to went back' (should be 'reported to have gone back'), 'the numbers went downhill at roughly 14000' (preposition error), and 'consistently rise up' (tense inconsistency). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses, especially when describing past trends, and ensure correct preposition usage when discussing numerical data.
