Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph shows how many people visiting the Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008 went there for the first time or were revisiting the place.
Although in the beginning of the period there were more first-time tourists on the Island, but gradually revisitors overtook and made up the highest portion of people travelling to the Caryl Island by 2008.
In 2000, people who had previously travelled to this island were 3000 in number. Returning visitors gradually kept increasing till 2004; by this year there were 12000 repeating tourists on Caryl Island. Between 2004 and 2006, there was a sharp rise in repeating visitors as the number climbed to 15000 before dramatically falling to 13500 in 2008.
However, people visiting the destination for the first time were 8000 initially, which is higher in number than revisitors in 2000. In the subsequent two years, less people were deciding to visit and explore Caryl Island as the number halved to only 4000 in 2002. But this number showed a very steady increase between 2002 and 2006. As more new people started visiting the place, the figure rose to 12000 by 2008. First time visitors declined in the first two years but gradually increased by the end of period; whereas returning visitors showed a sharp rise but gained less attention in the last two years of the time frame. Despite revisitors dropping and first timers increasing, returning tourists were still more in number in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have identified the main trends, such as the initial dominance of first-time visitors and the subsequent rise of returning visitors. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main features. You have also made relevant comparisons, such as noting that returning visitors were still higher in number by 2008 despite the fluctuations. The data is accurately reported, and the key features are highlighted well, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two categories of visitors. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'In the subsequent two years', and 'whereas' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is logical, moving from the initial state to the changes over time. Overall, the flow of information is easy to follow, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the data trends.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'sharp rise', 'dramatically falling', and 'steady increase' are appropriate for describing graph trends. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'less people' (should be 'fewer people') and 'revisitors' (which is less common than 'returning visitors'). However, the vocabulary is precise enough to communicate the trends effectively, and you avoid repetitive language, showing a good level of flexibility in your word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses starting with 'Although' or 'As'. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'less people' and 'the end of period' (missing an article), these do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. Your control over tense is consistent, and punctuation is generally accurate. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring articles are used correctly and refining the use of quantifiers.
