Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the main features of the graph, identifying trends for both visitor categories. However, the report is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall development. While the main trends are covered, the analysis lacks a clear, cohesive summary of the comparative data. The inclusion of typos like '20002' and '20008' instead of '2002' and '2008' suggests a lack of proofreading, which detracts from the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, ensure all data points are accurately transcribed and the word count requirement is met to allow for a more thorough analysis of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction and separate body paragraphs for each visitor type. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'meanwhile', 'subsequently', 'in comparison'). The referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of ideas feels slightly disjointed due to the brevity of the sentences and the lack of sophisticated signposting. Strengthening the logical links between the two visitor groups would enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends using terms like 'upward trend', 'drastic change', and 'increased significantly'. However, there is some repetition of basic structures and a lack of more precise, academic vocabulary. The misuse of numbers (e.g., '20002') indicates a lack of attention to detail. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'surged') and ensure that all numerical data is presented accurately. The range is sufficient to convey the main points but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the proportion of first time tourists... has increased' (where 'the number' would be more accurate) and missing articles (e.g., 'in year 2000'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement after introductory phrases. The errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
