Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrating the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, the number of both visitors went between 2000 to 16000 from 2000 to 2008. The number of first time visitors in 2000 were 8000, in 2002 they had a slight fall to 4000. Accordingly, in 2004 they again had a slight increase about 6000, in 2006 they were about 8000 and in 2008 there had a massive increase about 12000 of first time visitors.
On the other side, the returning visitors were 3000 in 2000, In 2002 there were a slight increase which was about 4000, In 2004 they were about 6000, In 2006 they were approximately 8000 and in 2008 again there had an enormous increase in 2008 which were about 12000.
In conclusion, while both types of visitors increased overall, returning visitors consistently outnumbered first-time visitors after 2000 and remained the larger group throughout the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the trends for both visitor types. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; the claim that returning visitors 'consistently outnumbered' first-time visitors is contradicted by the data, as first-time visitors were higher in 2000 and 2006. Additionally, the opening sentence is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, which affects the clarity of the introduction. While the key trends are reported, the comparison between the two groups could be more analytical rather than just listing figures year by year.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each category, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other side' and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'they' to refer to visitor numbers, which can be slightly ambiguous. Overall, the structure is functional and supports the reader's understanding of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'slight fall', 'massive increase', and 'enormous increase'. However, there is some repetition of basic structures and word choices. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'went between 2000 to 16000', which should be 'ranged from 2000 to 16000'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of first time visitors... were 8000') and incorrect preposition usage ('increase about 6000' instead of 'increase to 6000'). The opening sentence is a fragment, lacking a main verb. While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the report.
