Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the comparison between first time visitors and repeat ones who traveled to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, the first time visitors went down significantly for first couple of years but later rose steadily for six years. By contast, the returning visitors climbed rapidly for first six years but finally fell during the last couple of years.
In 2000, it is evident that eight thousand first time tourists traveled to Caryl Island but their number decreased quickly to 4000 in 2002. From 2002 to 2008, they increased steadily before reaching to almost 12000 in 2008.
On the other hand, the returning visitors soared from 3000 to 10000 in only 2 years from 2000 to 2002. Thet maintained this trend to some extent and reached 15000 until 2006. Finally, from 2006 to 2008, they decreased moderately from 15000 to 13500.
In 2003, both types of visitors were around 6000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview of the data. You have highlighted the key features, such as the initial decline of first-time visitors and the rapid growth of returning visitors, and included relevant comparisons. The data points are generally accurate, and the inclusion of the 2003 intersection point adds a nice analytical touch. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with maximum precision; for example, the '12000' figure for 2008 is a good inclusion, but ensure the distinction between the two categories is consistently clear throughout the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by visitor type. The use of cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'On the other hand', and 'Finally' helps the reader follow the progression of the data. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different trends. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are slightly more varied to avoid a mechanical feel, and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'they', 'this trend') is always unambiguous.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'soared', 'decreased rapidly', and 'rose steadily'. This allows for flexibility and precision in your reporting. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'repeat ones' (which is slightly informal) and 'first couple of years' (which is a bit vague). However, the vocabulary is generally appropriate for an academic task. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid slightly informal phrasing to enhance the academic tone of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'reaching to almost 12000' (should be 'reaching almost 12000') and 'Thet maintained' (a typo), these do not impede communication. You have used a variety of structures, including passive constructions and time-based clauses. To achieve a higher score, focus on eliminating small slips in preposition usage and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement, as well as increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences.
