Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, there was an upward trend in all the figures across the period given although there were some slight fluctuations. Additionally, it is clear that 2008 received more visitors as compared to others years while 2000 recorded the lowest numbers.

The first time visitors in 2000 were around 8000. Although the figures decreased to 4000 in 2002, they increased gradually to 6000 in 2004 and 8000 in 2006. By the end of the period, they had reached nearly 12000.

The number of returning visitors rose substantially from around 5000 in 2000 to 1000 in 2002. After that, they showed a gradual increase reaching 12000 in 2004 and by 2006 the figures were around 15000. Eventually, the numbers of the returning visitors dropped from around 15000 in 2006 to nearly 13500 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trend and specific data points. You successfully identified the upward trend and highlighted the start and end points. However, there is a significant factual error in the body paragraph regarding returning visitors: you state the figure rose from 5000 to 1000 in 2002, which contradicts the graph (it should be an increase). Additionally, the description of the 2006-2008 period for returning visitors is accurate, but the overall summary could be more analytical by focusing on the comparative peaks. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed accurately from the visual prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', 'Although', and 'After that' helps guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two categories of visitors. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is slightly mechanical. To improve, ensure that the progression of ideas flows more naturally between sentences, particularly when contrasting the two groups of visitors, rather than just listing the data chronologically.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trend', 'fluctuations', 'substantially', and 'gradual increase'. These choices are appropriate for an academic report. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and precision, such as 'others years' (should be 'other years') and the slightly repetitive structure when describing the figures. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more varied ways of describing trends, such as 'experienced a surge' or 'remained relatively stable', and ensure grammatical accuracy in noun phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'Although' clauses to show contrast. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'others years' instead of 'other years' and 'the numbers of the returning visitors' where the article 'the' is unnecessary. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the higher bands where error-free sentences are the majority. Focus on proofreading for small articles and pluralization errors to improve accuracy.
