Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of first time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, Caryl Island was most visited by returning tourists. However, it faces a drop in numbers of first-time visitors but later became popular among them.

In case of first-time visitors, a figure of 8000 in 2000 dropped significantly to figures 4000 in 2002. Later it accounted for a modest increase in numbers of visitors to 6000 in the year 2004. The figures continue to grow rapidly until reaching their peak of 12000 by the end of the trend.

On the other hands, in 2000, the numbers of tourists returning to visit Caryl Island were the least of all time (3000). In the year 2002, there was a drastic increase in the frequency of people exploring Caryl Island, with 10000. The figures reached their all-time high number of returning visitors (15000) before falling to figures around 13000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the initial figures, the trends over time, and the final data points. You successfully identified the main trends for both visitor categories. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention that returning visitors were more frequent, the summary of the trends could be more integrated. To improve, ensure that your overview highlights the most significant overall patterns rather than just stating a preference. The data points are generally accurate, and the comparison between the two groups is clear, which satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on each category. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In case of', and 'On the other hands' to link your points. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or grammatically awkward, such as 'On the other hands' (which should be 'On the other hand'). The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, which is characteristic of a Band 6.5 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'modest increase', 'drastic increase', and 'peak'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'In case of first-time visitors' (which is not the standard way to introduce a category) and 'least of all time' (which is slightly unnatural). While you successfully convey the meaning, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations for describing trends would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'it faces a drop' (tense inconsistency), 'figures 4000' (missing preposition 'at'), and 'the numbers of tourists... were the least of all time' (awkward phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing numerical data.
