Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line chart illustrates the amount of people who visit first time and and people who returning visitors who visited the caryl island between 2000 to 2008, with figures given in visitors
Overall, the number of first-time visitors fluctuated initially before rising steadily, whereas returning visitors experienced a sharp increase and reached a peak in 2006 before declining slightly. By the end of the period, both categories had recorded substantially higher figures than in 2000.
In 2000, approximately 8,000 people visited the destination for the first time, compared with only 3,000 returning visitors. The number of first-time visitors then fell by half to 4,000 in 2002. After that, it increased consistently, reaching 6,000 in 2004, around 9,000 in 2006, and approximately 12,000 in 2008.
In contrast, returning visitors rose dramatically from 3,000 in 2000 to 10,000 in 2002. This figure continued to grow, reaching 12,000 in 2004 and a peak of about 15,000 in 2006. However, the number subsequently decreased to roughly 13,500 in 2008. Despite this decline, returning visitors remained more numerous than first-time visitors in the final year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. The report covers all parts of the task, including the comparison between first-time and returning visitors. Key data points are accurately selected to support the description of the trends, such as the peak in 2006 and the initial fluctuations. The information is well-organised, and the comparison between the two categories is consistent throughout the response. You have effectively highlighted the significant changes over the eight-year period, meeting the requirements for a clear and accurate summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group the data by category. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', and 'however' effectively to link contrasting information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different trends. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is easy to follow, which demonstrates a good command of coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the trends, including terms like 'fluctuated', 'rising steadily', 'sharp increase', and 'declining slightly'. While there are some minor errors in the introductory sentence (e.g., 'amount of people' instead of 'number of people' and the repetition of 'and'), the overall lexical range is adequate for the task. You have successfully used topic-specific vocabulary to convey the data accurately. To reach a higher band, ensure that you avoid repetitive phrasing and minor grammatical slips in your word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as the awkward phrasing in the introduction ('amount of people who visit first time and and people who returning visitors') and the missing article before 'Caryl Island'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence structure is solid, allowing for a clear and professional presentation of the data.
