Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the trends for both visitor categories and noting the peak in 2008. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing data points rather than synthesising information. The summary is also slightly inaccurate, as the graph shows visitor numbers, not percentages. While the main features are highlighted, the lack of a clear overview or comparison between the two categories limits the score. To improve, focus on grouping data and identifying significant relationships between the two lines rather than just describing them chronologically.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is very limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'the rate is' are used excessively, making the text feel mechanical. There is a lack of linking words to connect ideas or contrast the two visitor types effectively. The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, as the text relies heavily on listing figures year by year. Improving the variety of transition signals and using referencing (e.g., 'the former', 'the latter') would significantly improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. The word 'rate' is used incorrectly throughout the text to describe raw numbers of visitors. There is little attempt to use a range of vocabulary to describe trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable'). The phrasing is often unnatural, such as 'as the time is going the rate is also increasing'. To achieve a higher band, you should learn specific collocations for describing graphs and avoid repeating the same nouns and verbs in every sentence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and sentence structure. For example, 'his rate is 8000' is incorrect, and 'this graph also tell' should be 'tells'. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation, such as 'in 2000 the rate of returning visitors is 22000,in 2002 the rate...'. The range of structures is limited to simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and using more complex sentence structures like relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions.
