Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the information about the amount of first time travellers and returning travellers who travelled Caryl Island during 2000 to 2008.

At the first glance,it is apparent that in initial year the first time travellers were started at 8000. After that, it can be observed that the amount of first time travellers were declined after 1 year. Surprisingly, the amount of travellers grew up gradually and in the last year it is peaked at [redacted phone].

Moving towards rest of information,it is evident that the amount of returning travellers were started at declined point which is 3000 in 2000. Interestingly, the amount of returning travellers were rose gradually in 2002 which value being 10000.Apart from this, it can be clearly seen that it was showed negligible change and grew up around 15000 in 2006. In addition to this, in 2008 the amount of returning travellers were declined gradually which value being approximately 14000.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the amount of returning travellers were maximum in every year, whilst the first time travellers were minimum in last years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the main features of the graph, but there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states first-time visitors peaked at 120,000, which is not supported by the provided data. Furthermore, the overall summary at the end contradicts the body paragraphs, claiming returning visitors were the maximum in every year, which is factually incorrect based on the graph. While the response covers the period and categories, the misinterpretation of the data points and the failure to provide a clear, accurate overview limit the achievement of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'Moving towards rest of information' and 'Apart from this'. The progression of ideas is sometimes illogical, particularly in the final paragraph where the summary statement contradicts the information presented earlier in the text. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences feels disjointed due to repetitive sentence structures and awkward transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and repetitive. The student frequently uses 'amount of' incorrectly (it should be 'number of' for countable nouns) and relies on basic verbs like 'grew up' and 'declined'. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'at the first glance' instead of 'at a glance' and 'declined point' instead of 'starting point'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of precision and the persistent misuse of basic collocations prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'travellers were started' and 'amount of returning travellers were rose'. The use of passive voice is often awkward or incorrect, for example, 'it was showed negligible change'. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods throughout the text. The majority of sentences contain errors, indicating a need for more focus on basic grammatical accuracy.
