Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, including the trends for both first-time and returning visitors. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the description of the first-time visitors' trend in 2004 and the peak in 2008 contains figures that do not clearly align with the provided graph. While the overview identifies the start and end points, it lacks a clear synthesis of the most significant trends. The response addresses the task requirements, but the lack of precision in reporting data points limits the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'whereas' and 'while'. The logical progression between sentences is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'In case of returning visitors', which is not a standard way to introduce a new section. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow of ideas within paragraphs is occasionally disjointed, making the overall structure feel somewhat forced.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate to convey the basic meaning, but it is limited and contains several inaccuracies. Words like 'rendred' (likely a misspelling of 'rendered'), 'commuters' (used to describe tourists, which is a collocation error), and 'inclined' (used incorrectly to mean 'increased') demonstrate a lack of precision. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated control. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include missing articles ('in year 2000'), incorrect verb forms ('maximum number of commuters returns'), and punctuation errors. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable and occasionally distracts the reader. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the errors in basic grammar prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
