The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The data compares the number of first-time visitors and returning visitors on Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.
At a glance, it is clear that the number of tourists who visited the island more than one time surged over the period, while the number of single-time visitors fluctuated, but ultimately rose at the end.
Looking at the line graph in detail, 8000 tourists visited Caryl Island for their first-time and nearly 3000 visitors came to visit Caryl Island for more than one time in 2000. However, the figure for first-time visitors experienced a sharp fall until 2002, while the curve of returning tourists saw a dramatic rise in this period, with a total of 4000 and 10,000 tourists for those respective visitor groups.
Regarding other information, after 2002, the number of first-time visitors increased considerably and reached nearly 12,000 marks at the end of the recorded period, while the returning visitors' curve rose gradually and peaked at almost 15,000 tourists before finishing at approximately 13,800 visitors at the end.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview of the data. You have successfully highlighted the key features, such as the surge in returning visitors and the fluctuations in first-time visitors. The comparison between the two groups is well-integrated throughout the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with absolute precision; for instance, stating 'reached nearly 12,000 marks' is slightly imprecise. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well and provided a logical summary of the information presented in the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'At a glance', 'However', and 'Regarding other information' to link your points. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report. The flow of information is easy to follow, and the relationship between the two visitor categories is clearly established throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'surged over the period', 'experienced a sharp fall', and 'rose gradually' are used effectively to describe trends. There is some minor awkwardness in phrasing, such as 'reached nearly 12,000 marks' and 'visited Caryl Island for more than one time', which could be more naturally expressed as 'reached a peak of nearly 12,000' or 'returning visitors'. However, the vocabulary is generally appropriate for an academic task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with good control. Most sentences are error-free, and your use of punctuation is generally accurate. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'visited Caryl Island for their first-time' (should be 'for the first time') and 'the curve of returning tourists saw a dramatic rise in this period' (which is grammatically sound but slightly wordy). The grammatical control is strong enough to ensure that the meaning is always clear, and you show a good ability to handle complex comparisons.
