Student answer (Band 6.5)
The graph illustrates the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, it is evident that first time visitors were more in 2000 and less in 2008 whereas in 2000 returning visitors very less and more in 2008.
Looking first at first time visitors, the graph clearly states that in 2000 there were 8000 visitors that visited Caryl Island and then it dropped down to only 4000 visitors in 2002. Looking at the graph, it is seen that after 2002, there has been a significant rise in the number of new visitors after 2002. New visitors kept increasing to 12000 in 2008.
Turning to the returning visitors, the graph clearly states that in 2000 there were only 3000 visitors that visited Carly Island. In 2002, the number of returning visitors started to rise and had a significant increase in the number of returning visitors till 2008 which was a little less than 14000.
To conclude, Caryl Island had more returning visitors than new visitors over a long period of time as it can be clearly seen in the graph.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response provides a clear overview and covers the main trends for both categories. You successfully identified the key features, such as the initial decline in first-time visitors and the steady growth of returning visitors. However, the conclusion is slightly inaccurate; the graph shows that first-time visitors were higher than returning visitors for the majority of the period (2000–2006), not the other way around. To improve, ensure your summary accurately reflects the data trends. The inclusion of specific data points like '8000' and '12000' is good, but ensure these are always compared against the other category to fully meet the 'make comparisons' requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each category, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Looking first at', 'Turning to', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes repetitive, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the flow. For instance, the phrase 'the graph clearly states' is used twice in a similar way. Using a wider range of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe trends like 'dropped down', 'significant rise', and 'increasing'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'very less' are grammatically incorrect and unnatural; 'significantly lower' or 'fewer' would be more appropriate. Additionally, there is a minor spelling error ('Carly Island' instead of 'Caryl Island'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe fluctuations and trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. For example, 'first time visitors were more in 2000' should be 'there were more first-time visitors in 2000'. The phrase 'returning visitors very less' lacks a verb. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every clause has a clear verb.
