Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line chart illustrates the amount of new visitors and previous visitors of Caryl Island through the years [redacted phone]
We can observe a steady increase in the number of returning visitors until the year 2006, after which a slight decrease can be seen. The number of first time visitors decreased between the years 2000 and 2002, after which uniform growth can be seen.
The red line shows us the number of returning visitors. Returning travellers increased each year, starting at 3000 in the year 2000, and peaking at 15000 in 2006. After this period a slight decline can be seen in the number of returning travellers, as it went down to just above 13000 in the year 2008.
The blue line represents the amount of new visitors. In the year 2000 there were 8000 new visitors, which was double of the amount in 2002. After the year 2002, the amount of first-time visitors increased steadily and peaked in the year 2008 at 12000 visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main trends and provides relevant data points to support the description. You have clearly distinguished between the two categories of visitors and highlighted the key peaks and troughs. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide a more comprehensive overview in the introduction. While you mention the trends, a more integrated summary comparing the two lines throughout the period would be beneficial. For example, noting that returning visitors generally outnumbered first-time visitors for the majority of the period would strengthen the 'overview' aspect of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, with each focusing on a specific category of visitor. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from a general overview to specific details. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'after which' and 'in the year 2000', to link sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect the paragraphs more fluidly. Currently, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs feels slightly mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'peaking', 'decline', and 'uniform growth' appropriately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'amount of' and 'number of'. To improve, try to use more varied synonyms such as 'figures for', 'volume of', or 'proportion of'. Additionally, ensure precise word choice; for instance, 'amount' is generally used for uncountable nouns, whereas 'number' or 'count' is more appropriate for countable visitors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'which was double of the amount in 2002' (which should be 'double the amount in 2002'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentences could benefit from more varied structures to demonstrate greater control. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which indicates a solid grasp of grammar, but increasing the complexity of your sentence construction would help elevate the score.
