The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph illustrates the proportion of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Carl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Firstly, the graph represents that there is a steady growth of returning visitors from 2000 to 2008.

Secondly, there is a decreased number of first time visitors in 2002 but after that there is gradual increase in that number in 2008.

After deeper study, its clear that the maximum proportion comes from the returning visitors and the minimum amount is occupied by first time visitors.

If we compare the maximum with minimum, there is big difference between them.

In conclusion, we can see that the trend is popular one among others no matter what the situation is.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified the main trends, the analysis is superficial and lacks the necessary detail required for an Academic Task 1 response. You have not included specific data points from the graph (such as starting or ending figures), which is essential for a high-scoring summary. The overview provided is vague, and the comparison between the two categories is underdeveloped. To improve, you must ensure you reach the word count by providing a more thorough description of the data, including specific years and numerical values to support your observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into short, simple paragraphs, which helps with basic readability. However, the progression of ideas is quite mechanical, relying on repetitive transition words like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'. There is a lack of sophisticated cohesive devices to link sentences or ideas together smoothly. The final conclusion is somewhat disconnected from the rest of the text and does not effectively summarize the main features of the graph. To improve, try to use a wider range of linking phrases and ensure that your sentences flow logically from one to the next rather than appearing as a list of isolated observations.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'steady growth', 'decreased number', and 'big difference' are functional but lack the precision expected at higher band levels. There is little attempt to use less common or academic vocabulary related to data description (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained constant'). Additionally, the word 'proportion' is used incorrectly in the context of the graph, which likely shows raw numbers rather than percentages. Expanding your range of synonyms and learning collocations specific to describing trends will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with limited use of complex grammatical forms. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several awkward phrasings, such as 'the graph represents that there is a steady growth' and 'the trend is popular one among others'. There are also minor errors in article usage and sentence construction. To improve, you should practice incorporating more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or participial phrases, and ensure that your subject-verb agreement and article usage are more consistent throughout the text.
