Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of new tourists and as well as visitors returning for a second trip in Caryl Island from 2000 to the next 8 years.

Overall, the number of people visiting for the first time declined between 2000 to 2003 before spiking at a constant rate without much fluctuations for the remainder of the period. Conversely, returning travellers maintained a positive upward trend peaking in 2006 before taking a slight dip.

Around 8000 people visited the Island in 2000 for the first time. The figure plummeted to 4000 in the next 3 years before climbing to a substantial amount of approximately 12000 people over the next 5 years without much fluctuations.

The number of returning visitors started at rock bottom with around 3000 in the year 2000. A contast rise was seen from 2000 to 2003 rocketing the number to 10000 visitors before peaking at a figure of around 15000 in the year 2007. A sudden downward surge was seen in the next year where less then 14000 and more then 13000 visitors returned for a second trip in the Island.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered both categories (first-time and returning visitors) and made relevant comparisons. The data points are generally accurate, although the description of the 'spiking' phase for first-time visitors is slightly imprecise given the graph's actual trajectory. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with maximum precision and avoid vague descriptors like 'without much fluctuations' when the graph shows a clear, steady incline. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Conversely' and 'before' to link information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring the overview is distinct from the detailed analysis. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences in the final paragraph could be smoother to avoid a list-like feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the trends, using terms like 'plummeted', 'upward trend', and 'downward surge'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'contast rise' (likely a typo for 'constant') and 'rock bottom', which is slightly informal for an academic report. Additionally, the phrase 'the next 8 years' is a bit awkward; it is better to specify the period (e.g., 'the period from 2000 to 2008'). Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would further enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'less then' instead of 'less than' and 'more then' instead of 'more than'. You also have minor prepositional errors, such as 'in Caryl Island' instead of 'on Caryl Island'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling and prepositional errors will significantly improve your accuracy.
