Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided line graph compares the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.
Overall, it is evident that returning visitors experienced a growth throughout the period, while starting the lowest pont. In contrast, first time visitors showed some fluctuations, beginning from the highest point and maintaining the lowest share at the end of the period.
First time visitors started from the highest point at 8000 in 2000, and then decreased significantly to 4000 in 2002, before rising to 10000 in 2006, and peaking at just below 12000 in 2000.
While returning visitors accounted for around 3000 in 2000, and then surged up substantially to 10000 in 2002, and the figure again jumped up to about 15000 in 2006, higher than in any other year. Moreover, the figure for returning visitors then observed a marginal decline to just below 14000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the trends. You successfully identified the main features, such as the growth in returning visitors and the fluctuations in first-time visitors. However, there is a significant factual error in the third paragraph where you state the peak for first-time visitors was in '2000' instead of 2008. Additionally, the data points mentioned for 2002 and 2006 are slightly inaccurate based on the graph provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are transcribed with absolute precision and that the overview highlights the most significant differences between the two categories.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'While', and 'Moreover' to link ideas effectively. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the referencing is precise; for example, in the final paragraph, 'the figure' is used repeatedly, which makes the writing feel slightly repetitive. Using synonyms or rephrasing would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'surged', 'substantially', and 'marginal decline'. These choices are appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor errors, such as 'starting the lowest pont' (spelling error: point) and 'maintaining the lowest share', which is slightly imprecise in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more varied collocations and ensuring accurate spelling will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While returning visitors accounted for... and then surged up...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'experienced a growth throughout the period, while starting the lowest pont' (should be 'starting from the lowest point'). Additionally, the sentence structure in the third paragraph is slightly clunky due to the misuse of conjunctions. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor errors will be beneficial.
