Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and identifies key features such as the peak years for both categories. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, relying heavily on listing data points rather than synthesising the information. While the comparison between first-time and returning visitors is present, the description of the trends could be more analytical. The summary at the end is accurate, but the overall development of the response is limited by the repetitive structure of the body paragraphs. To improve, focus on grouping data to highlight significant shifts rather than reporting each year chronologically.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moving further', and 'Overall' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing within sentences could be smoother. For instance, the phrasing 'first time visiting people number' is clunky and affects the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within the body paragraphs could be strengthened by using more varied linking phrases to connect the data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. There is a reliance on basic descriptors like 'increased' and 'decreased'. The use of informal terms such as 'newbies' is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires a formal tone. Additionally, there are minor errors in word formation, such as 'repersentation' (spelling) and 'first time visiting people number' (awkward collocation). Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more precise terms for describing trends would significantly improve the quality of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder readability. Examples include 'first time visiting people number seemed to decreased' (incorrect verb form) and 'number of newcomers were' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are missing articles and awkward phrasing throughout. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage would be beneficial.
