Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of first-time and returning visitors who travelled to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the number of returning visitors increased considerably over the period, although it experienced a slight decline at the end. By contrast, the number of first-time visitors initially fell before rising steadily and reaching its highest level in 2008.

In 2000, approximately 8,000 first-time visitors travelled to the island, compared with only 3,000 returning visitors. However, the number of first-time visitors fell sharply to around 4,000 in 2002. It then recovered gradually, reaching about 6,000 in 2004 and approximately 9,000 in 2006. By 2008, the figure had climbed further to around 12,000, representing an overall increase of roughly 4,000 visitors compared with the starting point.

Returning visitors followed a different pattern. Their number rose dramatically from approximately 3,000 in 2000 to 10,000 in 2002, before increasing to 12,000 in 2004. The figure then reached a peak of about 15,000 in 2006. However, this upward trend was reversed in the final two years, with the number falling to approximately 13,500 in 2008. Despite this decline, returning visitors remained more numerous than first-time visitors at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends for both visitor categories and supported these with specific data points from the graph. The selection of key features, such as the initial decline of first-time visitors and the peak of returning visitors in 2006, is accurate and well-highlighted. Comparisons between the two groups are made throughout the text, particularly in the final sentence where you contrast their relative numbers at the end of the period. The information is logically presented and fully satisfies the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed analysis of each visitor type. Cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'However', and 'Despite this decline' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas, ensuring the text flows smoothly. The referencing is clear, and the structure of the report is professional and easy to follow. There is a natural movement from the general trends to the specific data points, which demonstrates a high level of coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends accurately, such as 'increased considerably', 'fell sharply', 'recovered gradually', and 'upward trend was reversed'. The language is precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation, and the vocabulary is varied enough to avoid repetition. While the range is solid, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to data interpretation could elevate the response further, but the current level is already quite strong and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'By 2008, the figure had climbed further to around 12,000, representing an overall increase of roughly 4,000 visitors compared with the starting point.' Punctuation is accurate, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The use of past tense is consistent throughout the report, which is appropriate for describing data from a completed period. The control over grammar is consistent, and there are no errors that impede communication.
