Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates the number of people who visited Caryl Island for the first time and those who returned the island from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, both first time visitors and return visitors increased by the end of the period. Additionally, the first time visitors started 2000 with a larger number when compared with returning visitors, however, by 2008 returning visitors number was superior.
In 2000, there were 8,000 people who visited the Caryl Island for the first time, this number dropped by half by 2002. The number of visitor, however, started to increase constantly from 2002, and the island finished 2008 with around 12,000 first time visitor.

After that, that was a sight decrease to just under 14,000 by the end of the period.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task well. You have identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your descriptions. The overview is clear and highlights the key shift in the relationship between the two groups of visitors. You have made appropriate comparisons, such as noting when the numbers matched and when one group overtook the other. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, the claim that the total was 12,000 in 2001 is a calculation that is not explicitly stated in the graph, and it is better to focus on the individual trends of the two lines provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs. Information is sequenced effectively, moving from the general trend to specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'In comparison', 'Additionally', and 'After that' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow, such as 'that was a sight decrease', where the pronoun usage is slightly awkward. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the trends, such as 'increased', 'dropped', 'peaked', and 'constantly'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'returning visitors number was superior' (a more natural phrasing would be 'higher') and 'sight decrease' (should be 'slight'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise collocations would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'returned the island' (should be 'returned to the island'), 'number of visitor' (should be 'number of visitors'), and 'It's number' (should be 'Its number'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of possessive pronouns. The majority of your sentences are clear, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed for a higher score.
