The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph compares the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. However, as illustrated by the graph the total number of visitors for both categories increased over the eight year period. Moreover, the number of returning visitors outnumbered the number of first time visitors throughout this time period.
To begin with, for first time in the year 2000, the number of first time visitors was approximately 8,000. In contrast to this, the number of returning visitors was roughly lower than 3000. In addition to this, by the year 2002 the number of first time visitors decreased to approx 4000 by half to 4000. While the number of returning visitors drastically rose by more than double to 10,000. Moving on in the year 2004 the number of first time visitors rose to 6000 while the number of returning visitors rose to 12000. Furthermore, in the year 2006 the number of first time visitors increased to 10,000. Whereas, the number of returning visitors reached a peak of 15000. Finally, in the year 2008 the number of returning visitors declined to 14000 but the number of first time visitors reached a peak of 13000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all requirements of the task. You have identified the main trends and provided data points to support your observations. However, there is a significant factual error in your second paragraph: you state that in 2000, returning visitors were 'lower than 3000', whereas the graph shows them at approximately 12,000. Additionally, your claim that returning visitors outnumbered first-time visitors 'throughout this time period' is contradicted by the data in 2008, where first-time visitors reached a higher peak. Accuracy in data reporting is essential for a higher band score in Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction and chronological progression. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In contrast to this', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing is a bit unbalanced, with the second paragraph containing the bulk of the information. To improve, ensure that your paragraph breaks are used to group related information more effectively, perhaps by separating the trends of the two visitor types into distinct analytical sections.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'outnumbered', 'drastically rose', and 'reached a peak'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'for first time in the year 2000' and 'lower than 3000' (when referring to a specific point). The repetition of 'the number of' at the start of almost every sentence makes the writing feel somewhat monotonous. Incorporating more varied synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' and avoiding repetitive sentence structures would enhance your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'by approx 4000 by half to 4000' is redundant and confusing. There are also minor punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'However' in the first paragraph and the fragmented sentence 'For first time in the year 2000...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on proofreading to ensure your sentences are complete and that your numerical descriptions are concise.
