Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of first-time visitors and returning visitors who visited Carly Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the number of returning visitors increased considerably over the period, although it declined slightly after 2006. In contrast, first-time visitors initially decreased but then rose steadily. By 2008, returning visitors were still more numerous than first-time visitors.

In 2000, approximately 8,000 first-time visitors went to Carly Island, compared with only 3,000 returning visitors. By 2002, the number of first-time visitors had fallen to around 4,000, while returning visitors increased sharply to 10,000.

From 2002 onwards, both figures generally increased. First-time visitors rose from 4,000 in 2002 to 6,000 in 2004, and then increased further to about 9,000 in 2006. Finally, the figure reached approximately 12,000 in 2008. Returning visitors also grew, reaching 12,000 in 2004 and peaking at around 15,000 in 2006. However, this number then fell slightly to about 13,500 in 2008.

Overall, the island experienced a significant growth in both types of visitors during the period, with returning visitors showing the more dramatic increase.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and selected key data points to support your description. The comparison between the two categories is well-integrated throughout the report. You successfully identified the initial decline in first-time visitors and the overall growth for both groups, as well as the peak and subsequent slight decline for returning visitors. The information is accurate and logically presented, meeting the requirements for a Band 8 performance by covering all key features well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group the data effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'By 2002', and 'From 2002 onwards' to link information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the initial trends from the later developments. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between the two visitor types is consistently maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'increased considerably', 'declined slightly', 'rose steadily', and 'peaking at'. The language is precise and appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, it stays within a standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'figures' and 'numbers' to demonstrate a wider, more flexible lexical range. However, the current usage is error-free and fits the context perfectly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'By 2002, the number of first-time visitors had fallen to around 4,000, while returning visitors increased sharply to 10,000.' The use of past tenses is consistent and accurate throughout the report. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over sentence structure is strong, supporting a clear and professional tone.
