Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph demonstrates the number of first time visitors and returning visitors, who visited Caryl Island between 2000 to 2008.

Here, the X axis represents the year between 2000 to 2008 and the Y axis represents number of visitors. The blue line displays first time visitors while the red one displays returning visitors.

Overall for conclusion, the number of returning visitors was greater than the number of first time visitors. There were major fluctuations in the number of first time visitors and minor ups and downs in the number of returning visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identify the trends, you fail to provide specific data points to support your descriptions, which is essential for Task 1. For example, you mention the number of visitors 'declined' or 'inclined' without citing the approximate figures from the graph. Furthermore, the description of the trends is slightly confusing; you refer to 'the number' as a singular entity rather than distinguishing clearly between the two categories throughout the body paragraphs. To improve, ensure you select key data points to illustrate the trends and compare the two categories more explicitly at specific intervals.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'the number of'. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is clear, but the logical progression within the body paragraphs is hindered by vague references. For instance, in the third paragraph, it is unclear which category you are referring to when you say 'the number is returning visitors'. Using more varied linking words and ensuring clear referencing would significantly improve the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe trends using words like 'declined', 'inclined', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'majorly in year 2002' is not standard academic English; 'significantly' or 'notably' would be more appropriate. Additionally, you use 'inclined' to mean 'increased', which is not the standard usage in this context. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and improving your control over collocations related to data description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'the number is returning visitors' should be 'the number of returning visitors', and 'between 2000 to 2008' should be 'between 2000 and 2008'. There are also issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'in year 2002' instead of 'in the year 2002'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional phrases.
