Student answer (Band 5.0)

The provided line graph illustrates the number of first time tourists and returning travellers who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, it seems that both the number faced certain fluctuation. However, returning visitors recorded the gradual rise and first time tourists figure increased rapidly after slight decline.

In 2000, returning travellers number was at nearly 3000 and first time visitors at 8000. After that, previous tourists graph made a huge surge at 10000 whereas, new visitors number faced a sudden decline. Moreover, both the graphs made similar move towards the top.

In 2006, new visitors number was making an upward shift while, old travellers figure experienced an unexpected downward shift. Both the data made an upward move from 2002 to 2006. At the end of 2008, recent visitors graph ends around at 13000 and new visitors tried to touch the 12000 bench mark.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have identified the main trends, the analysis is somewhat superficial. You describe the trends in a fragmented way rather than providing a clear, cohesive overview of the data. The description of the figures is occasionally inaccurate; for instance, stating that the 'previous tourists graph made a huge surge at 10000' is vague and lacks precise reference to the timeline. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary of the overall trends and support your points with accurate data points from the graph, ensuring you meet the length requirement to fully develop your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'In 2000' and 'In 2006'. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two groups of visitors. Referencing is also unclear at times, particularly when you refer to 'previous tourists' and 'recent visitors' without clearly linking them back to the categories defined in the prompt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected for a higher band. You rely on basic descriptors like 'huge surge', 'sudden decline', and 'upward move'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as '12000 bench mark' and 'both the number faced certain fluctuation'. To improve, try to use more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'experienced a significant increase', or 'remained relatively stable'. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' will help you avoid repetition and demonstrate a better command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'both the number faced certain fluctuation' (should be 'both numbers experienced fluctuations') and 'returning visitors recorded the gradual rise' (missing 'a'). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for articles and pluralisation will significantly improve your accuracy.
