Student answer (Band 6.0)

This graph displays information regarding the number of new tourists and returning tourists who visited Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the number of returning travellers remained highest as compared to the first time tourists in all years.

Furthermore, the number of first time visitors showed an overall upward trend despite slight fluctuation starting from a number of 8000 in 2000 which dipped to around 4000 in 2002 but continuously increased in later years and peaked at around 12000 in 2008.

In contrast, the number of second time visitors showed an upward trend throughout but declined significantly in the last period. It recorded an initial modest number of around 3000 in 2000 which substantially increased to around 10000 in 2002 and peaked at approximately 15000 in 2006 but later on dropped to nearly below 14000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and key data points. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of the analysis. While the main trends are identified, the comparison between the two categories could be more detailed to fully satisfy the task requirements. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to highlight the most significant differences between the two visitor types throughout the period. To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive summary that meets the length requirement, allowing for a more thorough exploration of the data points and their implications.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'Overall' helps to guide the reader through the information. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two categories of visitors. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the transition between ideas is smoother and more natural, rather than relying on standard linking words at the start of every paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with terms like 'upward trend', 'fluctuation', and 'substantially' used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic structures. The student attempts to use descriptive language, but it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'plateaued', 'surged', or 'marginal', and avoid repeating the same phrasing when describing numerical changes. The current range is sufficient for the task but does not demonstrate the flexibility needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow, and the grammatical control is generally good. There are no major errors that impede communication. However, the range of structures is somewhat limited, and the writing could benefit from more varied sentence beginnings and complex grammatical forms, such as relative clauses or passive voice, to enhance the flow. The punctuation is generally accurate, but the overall complexity of the grammar remains at a moderate level. Increasing the variety of sentence types would help improve this score.
