Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified the main trends, the analysis is underdeveloped. For instance, you mention a 'decrease' in first-time visitors, but the data description is contradictory, stating the number 'increased' to 12,000. Furthermore, the summary of the returning visitors is confusing, as you describe a 'boom' but then state the figure is 'only 13,000'. To improve, ensure you provide a clear, accurate overview and support your points with precise data points from the graph without contradicting yourself. The lack of sufficient length prevents a full development of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally confusing. For example, the transition 'However' in the final paragraph does not logically connect to the preceding sentence about the growth of returning visitors. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, making the progression of ideas feel disjointed. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'subsequently', 'meanwhile') to create a smoother flow between sentences and paragraphs, and ensure that your logical connectors accurately reflect the relationship between the ideas presented.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision. You use some relevant terms like 'infographic', 'striking indicator', and 'boomed', but there are issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'the given infographic represent' contains a subject-verb agreement error, and 'spent their time in' is not the most natural way to describe tourism data. To reach a higher band, aim to use more precise academic vocabulary, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable', and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate for a formal report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. You have issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'infographic represent', 'illustrate') and tense consistency. Additionally, there are sentence structure errors, such as 'the number of visitors increased from about 8,000... to over 12,000', which is a fragment or poorly integrated clause. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often inaccurate. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subjects and verbs agree, and proofreading for common errors in tense and article usage. Increasing the number of error-free sentences is essential for a higher score.
