Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line chart tracks the quantity of the tourists between two categories; first time visitors and frequent visitors in Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. First time visitors are represented by blue line and in contrast, returning visitors are shown by red line.
In the year 2000, graph tells that there were 8000 first time visitors and around 3000 returning visitors. However, this situation changed considerably by 2002, when amount of first time visitors decreased sharply to 4000 whereas number of returning visitors rose from 3000 to 10000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all parts of the task by comparing the two categories of visitors across the specified timeframe. To reach a higher band, ensure your 'overview' is more distinct; currently, it is embedded within the body paragraphs. A strong overview should highlight the most significant trends, such as the overall growth in visitor numbers or the contrasting patterns between the two groups, and be placed immediately after the introduction. Your data selection is accurate, and you have made relevant comparisons between the two lines throughout the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific period or trend, which helps the reader follow the progression of the data. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'however', 'in contrast', and 'on the other hand', to link ideas. However, the flow can feel slightly mechanical at times. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the overall structure is appropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1 report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'decreased sharply', 'positive climb', and 'reached its peak'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and article usage, such as 'the quantity of the tourists' (should be 'the number of tourists') and 'first time visitors line' (missing 'the'). You rely on some repetitive phrasing. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and ensure correct collocation, such as using 'fluctuated' or 'experienced a steady increase' instead of 'positive climb'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors, particularly with articles ('the blue line', 'the red line') and noun phrases ('amount of first time visitors' should be 'the number of first-time visitors'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'graph tells that there were'. To improve, focus on consistent article usage and subject-verb agreement. While you attempt complex sentences, they are not always perfectly controlled. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will help you move into the higher bands.
