Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph regarding visitors to Caryl Island. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that returning visitors peaked at 15,000 in 'the second last year 2006' and dropped to '13500' in the final year, and mentions that first-time visitors reached 12,000 in the final year, whereas precision in reading graphical data is crucial for Academic Task 1. Furthermore, the introduction mistakenly refers to the visual prompt as a 'bar graph' instead of a line graph. While an overview is attempted ('Overall, first time visitors intercross retuning visitors...'), the execution is somewhat confusing and lacks precise analytical clarity. This places the performance firmly at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into three paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor cohesion and mechanical transitions, such as 'At 2000 the number of tourist visit first time they are about 8000'. Referencing is frequently unclear, and cohesive devices are either inadequate or awkwardly used, as seen in 'after the time it became less than returning visitors'. Paragraphing lacks clear separation of analytical points, leading to a somewhat jumbled body section where multiple trends are lumped together without clear signposting. These organizational weaknesses align with the Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively limited and repetitive, featuring frequent reliance on basic terms like 'number', 'visitor', and 'year'. There are also several lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'intercross' instead of 'intersect' or 'cross', 'higest' (highest), 'stragtly' (straight), and 'remaning' or 'returning' variations. The attempt to use less common vocabulary results in unnatural collocations or inaccurate terms. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general subject matter, errors in spelling and word choice are noticeable and occasionally cause strain for the reader, fitting Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and attempted complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of returning visitor was'), tense confusion ('At 2000 the number of tourist visit first time they are about'), and missing prepositions. Punctuation is also problematic, leading to run-on sentences like 'First time visitor slightly down to 4000 visitor than it grew up year by year wher it hit the visitor of 12000 in the final year.' These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5 level of grammatical control.
