Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the line graph regarding first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. The overview successfully captures the general trends, noting the initial differences and the subsequent dramatic rise in returning visitors. Key data points, such as the figures for 2000, 2004, 2006, and 2008, are appropriately selected and compared. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reporting specific figures (such as the 2004 total for returning visitors), and the overall development tends to be slightly descriptive rather than fully analytical. Nevertheless, all major trends and comparisons are present, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid 6.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is arranged coherently overall, with a clear attempt to structure the answer into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs detailing the timeline. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Overall', 'At start', 'Conversely', and 'At last'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes mechanical or awkward, and paragraphing is underdeveloped since the body text is grouped into dense blocks rather than distinct, logically separated years or trends. Furthermore, punctuation errors (such as missing spaces and periods) occasionally disrupt the logical flow between sentences. The organisation demonstrates an adequate framework, earning a Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'dramatic rise', 'unimaginable rise', 'unpredictable decline', and 'plummet'. However, many word choices and collocations are unnatural or inappropriate, such as 'minor majority', 'in twice and more numbers', 'marginable rose', and 'new added returning visitors'. There are also vocabulary errors that stem from literal translation or incorrect word forms. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general meaning, the noticeable inaccuracies in collocation and word formation place this firmly at a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting to connect clauses using relative pronouns and conjunctions. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the returning visitors was', 'visitors who visited... had a significant numbers'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward phrasing. Punctuation control is also weak, with missing spaces after commas and periods. Although these errors do not completely impede communication, their high frequency across most sentences prevents the score from reaching a Band 6.0.
