Student answer (Band 5.5)

The following graph illustrates the amount of initial customers and revisitors of Caryl Island between the years 2000 and 2008. Overall, this graph demonstrates how returning customers significantly surpass the number of first time visitors, such as in the year 2006, the island had about 15000 returned customers, while the first time customer then were approximately 10000, respectively.

In the graph, the red line symbolises the returning visitors with the blue line representing first time visitors. Initially, first time visitors lie at 8000 customers in the year 2000, which unfortunately faces a steep decline in new visitors in the year 2002. Contrastingly, the revisitors starting from about 3000 visitors, has consistantly faced strong growth with reaching a maximum amount of about 15000 visitors in the yer 2006. Consequently, the frequency of revisitors dropped after 2006, going down to only about 14000 visitors, with the first time visitors having a maximum of only 12000 visitors. This diversity between the number of revisitors and first time comers is that the island offers a great experience and time which substantially attracts visitors for multiple visits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons between first-time visitors and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. The response presents an overview in the introduction and highlights key data points, such as the peak numbers in 2006. However, the student includes personal speculation in the final sentence ('This diversity between the number of revisitors and first time comers is that the island offers a great experience...'), which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response where outside knowledge or assumptions should not be added. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing it firmly at a band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, starting with an introductory overview and following with a body paragraph detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Initially', 'Contrastingly', and 'Consequently'. However, some referencing and cohesive phrasing feel slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'This diversity between the number of revisitors and first time comers'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, providing a coherent overall arrangement that allows the reader to follow the main trends easily. Progression is generally clear throughout, supporting a band 6.0 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'significantly surpass', 'steep decline', and 'substantially attracts'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'amount' used instead of 'number' (e.g., 'amount of initial customers'), 'revisitors' instead of returning visitors, 'consistantly' (spelling error), and 'yer' instead of year. Furthermore, phrasing like 'first time comers' is unnatural. These lexical slips and spelling errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making 6.0 an appropriate score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like 'Overall, this graph demonstrates how...'. Nevertheless, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text. For example, 'such as in the year 2006, the island had about 15000 returned customers, while the first time customer then were approximately 10000, respectively' contains punctuation and agreement issues alongside misuse of 'respectively'. Additionally, clauses are sometimes awkwardly spliced or overloaded. Because these errors do not severely impede communication, the response meets the criteria for a band 6.0.
