Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph, including the starting points, peaks, and final figures for both categories. However, the interpretation contains significant inaccuracies regarding the data points. For instance, the student states that returning visitors were around 3000 in 2000 and rose to 10000 in 2002, and mentions first-time visitors reaching nearly 12000 in 2008, which misreads the graphical information provided. Furthermore, the overview is weak, consisting of disconnected and confusing statements rather than a clear summary of overall trends. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The organizational structure of the response is flawed. The division into paragraphs is chaotic, with the body paragraph cluttered and difficult to follow due to a lack of clear progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repeatedly, such as the repetitive use of phrases like 'was seen it's consumption at'. Referencing is also confusing, making it hard to track whether the data refers to first-time or returning visitors. Although there is an attempt to structure an introduction, body, and conclusion, the poor logical flow and mechanical cohesion restrict the coherence to a band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the presence of basic paragraphing.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily flawed. The student repeatedly relies on inappropriate phrases like 'was seen it's consumption at', which does not make sense in the context of tourism data. There are also frequent word choice errors, such as 'average the visitors' instead of 'number of visitors'. While the response includes some task-related terms like 'visitors', 'increase', and 'decrease', the range is extremely limited and imprecise, and the frequent lexical errors impede communication. This performance aligns with the band 4 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. The text contains frequent, severe errors in sentence structure, verb tenses, and agreement, such as 'The line graph is represent average the visitors' and 'returning visitors was seen it's 2000 has recorded'. There is a heavy reliance on passive constructions that are incorrectly formed and nonsensical ('was seen it's consumption at'). Simple sentences are prone to structural errors, and attempts at complex structures completely break down grammatically. This density of errors places the grammar firmly at a band 4.0 level.
