Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the line graph regarding visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. However, the opening sentence is grammatically incomplete ('The graph clearly demonstrates that the amount of first time and returning visitors...'), failing to state an action or verb for the clause. While the writer identifies general trends such as the higher number of returning visitors and peaks like 2006, the overall overview lacks clarity and specific data points (such as starting or ending figures). The reporting of trends is somewhat vague, and the conclusion contains extraneous interpretation rather than summarising data. Consequently, Task Achievement aligns with a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical progression and overall flow are frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and phrasing. The transition between sentences feels mechanical or disjointed, such as 'In the initial year, the first group's number is in top comparing the second group.' Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or clumsy, and pronoun referencing can be unclear. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks cohesive structure. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 range for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent unnatural collocations and word choices. Examples include 'amount of first time and returning visitors' (where 'number' should be used for countable visitors), 'in top comparing the second group', and 'revisit groups'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'surprisingly' and 'repeatedly', but these are often misapplied. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control is insufficient for a higher band. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.0 in Lexical Resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing exhibits a limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences frequently result in serious errors. There is a notable fragment at the very beginning ('The graph clearly demonstrates that the amount of first time and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.'), which lacks a main predicate. Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('returning visitors numbers are', 'amount were') and awkward prepositional usage ('at lowest in the mentioned years'). These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar score at Band 5.0.
