Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between first-time visitors and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the main trends well. Key data points, such as the peak of 15,000 first-time visitors in 2004 and the starting figures of 3,500 and 8,000, are accurately cited and reported. The response covers all required aspects of the prompt without significant omissions, demonstrating a clear understanding of the visual data provided. However, the overview could be slightly more fully developed to reach higher bands. Therefore, a solid band 6.5 or 7 is appropriate, and we award a band 6.0 based on minor developmental limitations in the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with logical paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Thenafter', and 'Subsequently' are employed to sequence information, though some of these transitions feel somewhat mechanical or are awkwardly phrased. Referencing is generally clear, guiding the reader through the contrasting trends of the two visitor types. However, spacing and punctuation errors around conjunctions and punctuation marks—such as 'But ,in end,'—disrupt the flow and occasionally detract from the overall cohesion. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate and logical, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for Task 1, including terms like 'dwindled', 'upward trajectory', 'plummeted', and 'surged'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'intial visitors' (initial), 'acquired highest number', and 'returned people' instead of 'returning visitors'. Additionally, spelling and word formation errors like 'continousaly', 'Thenafter', 'modesty' instead of 'modestly', and 'Atlast' are present. While the lexical range is minimally adequate for conveying the information, these frequent errors limit the score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory dependent clauses ('Looking from an overall perspective, it is crystal clear that...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several structural and article errors, such as missing articles ('visited Caryl island'), incorrect prepositions or phrasing ('experienced a general dwindled', 'amount of returned people'), and punctuation issues like missing spaces after commas and periods. While communication is not severely impeded and the reader can follow the data points, the frequency of errors prevents the response from achieving a higher band. A score of 5.5 accurately reflects these limitations.
