Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph showing visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting and misinterpretation of the trends. For instance, the student states that in 2000 'the accounted for 3000 visitors of returning visitors, while First time visitors for proportion is 8000', and later describes wild fluctuations and numbers like 15000 and 13500 without clear, accurate grounding in the visual data. While an overview is attempted, the confusion over the numbers and trends means the task is only partially addressed, earning a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, body, and a brief concluding overview. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, such as starting the second paragraph with 'First of all, In 2000, the accounted for...' and transitioning abruptly with 'In the contrary'. Referencing and cohesive devices are often inaccurate or mechanical, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information smoothly. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within sentences and between ideas remains faulty, corresponding to a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with frequent word-choice and collocation errors that impede clear communication. Examples include 'first time visited', 'the rapidly increses', and 'marginally decerses'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to data trends, but these attempts are marred by severe spelling and morphological errors, such as 'increses' and 'decerses'. The range is minimally adequate for a basic description, but the high frequency of lexical errors places this at a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for overall vocabulary effort.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences contain frequent and noticeable errors that often distort meaning, such as 'the accounted for 3000 visitors' and 'the rapidly increses the returning visitors such as 10000'. Complex sentence forms are attempted, but they are consistently faulty and lack control over basic subject-verb agreement, prepositions, and verb tenses. Punctuation is also sparse and sometimes absent. Due to the high frequency of grammatical inaccuracies causing difficulty for the reader, this criterion is awarded a Band 4.0.
