Student answer (Band 6.0)

The illustrated line graph depicts the information about the number of visitors, including first time visitors and the visitors who were returning from Caryl Island in time-line of eight years from year 2000 to 2008.

Overall, it is clear that the number of the visitors who were returning were high as comapred to the new visitors. As shown, the number of visitors returning from Caryl Island were daramatically increased and then slightly decreased. Moreover, the number of new vistiors were declined at the start and after that substantially increased.

Therefore, the number of returning visitors were recorded approximately 2,500 in year 2000, which were darmatically increased to around 15,000 in year 2006 and then slightly decreased to about 13,000 in year 2008. Furthermore, the new visitors were 8000 in year 2000, after that sharply declined and became at 4000 in year 2002, after that the number of new visitors were sharply rose and became at almost 12,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the line graph, including an overview of the main trends and specific data points for both first-time and returning visitors. The student correctly identifies that returning visitors were higher overall and details the figures for the years 2000, 2006, and 2008. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reporting the starting and ending figures, such as stating new visitors were 8,000 in 2000 when the graph indicates a different value. Despite these minor discrepancies, the main trends are adequately reported and compared, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor for addressing all parts of the task with relevant, though slightly underdeveloped, ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph detailing the data. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as "Overall," "Moreover," and "Therefore," although some are used a bit mechanically or inappropriately, such as "Therefore" used to introduce a specific data point rather than a logical consequence. Paragraphing is present, separating the overview from the detailed body. Referencing is mostly clear, though transitions between sentences can feel slightly repetitive and disjointed at times. This demonstrates the characteristics of Band 6, where cohesion is sometimes faulty and referencing is not always completely smooth.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for a graph summary, including words like "substantially," "dramatically," and "fluctuations." However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors, such as "daramatically," "darmatically," and "vistiors," alongside awkward phrasing like "visitors who were returning from Caryl Island" instead of returning visitors to the island. Furthermore, repetitive phrasing like "in year 2000" and "after that" limits the flexibility of expression. Because the vocabulary range is adequate for the task but contains noticeable spelling and collocation errors that occasionally distract the reader without fully impeding communication, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ("visitors who were returning") and compound-complex sentences. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including subject-verb agreement issues ("the number of returning visitors were high") and repetitive run-on structures linked with commas and "after that." Punctuation is also basic. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of errors in complex structures prevents the response from reaching a higher band, fitting comfortably within the Band 5.5 descriptor.
