The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the number of people who visited Caryl Island over an 8-year period from 2000, with data given in two yearly increments.
In 2000, the number of people who visited the destination for the first time was approximately 8,000 per annum, compared with only about 3,000 returning visitors. However, by 2002, this trend had reversed, with slightly more than 4,000 new visitors compared to nearly 10,000 returning visitors.
From 2002 to 2006, both returning and first time visitor numbers increased dramatically rising to a combined total of well over 24,000 visitors. While the combined number of people visiting the island remained high in 2008, the variation between first time and returning visitors narrowed as the number of people on their first visit continued to increase while those coming back for additional visits fell.
Overall, it is clear that the number of people visiting Caryl island increased significantly over the given period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully covers all the key features of the line graph, providing a clear overview of the data trends from 2000 to 2008. The student effectively reports and compares the numbers for both first-time visitors and returning visitors. Key data points, such as the initial figures in 2000 and the peak figures towards the end of the period, are accurately cited and contrasted. The trends are well-described, including the reversal of visitor numbers by 2002 and the subsequent rise and narrowing variation. The response presents a fully developed overview and meets all requirements of the prompt without omitting any major features, satisfying the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The information and ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader smoothly through the graph's data from beginning to end. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to the introduction, initial trends, subsequent changes, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'From 2002 to 2006', and 'Overall' are managed well to indicate progression and contrast. Referencing is clear throughout, and the overall progression is logical, though occasional minor shifts in cohesion keep it from reaching the highest descriptive tier. Overall, the structural flow is clear and effective.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, including terms like 'illustrates', 'per annum', 'trend', and 'combined total'. Less common lexical items and collocations are attempted, such as 'returning visitors' and 'variation between first time and returning visitors', with good awareness of the topic. Word choices are generally precise, and spelling is accurate throughout. Although the range of vocabulary is slightly more standard than exceptionally wide, it provides sufficient flexibility and precision to communicate the information clearly without impeding the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory participial clauses ('rising to a combined total') and subordinate clauses ('While the combined number...'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, with good control over tense usage and punctuation. There is a minor punctuation slip in the sentence 'combined total of well over 24,000 visitors. While the combined number...', where a space is missing after the period, but this does not impede overall communication. The grammatical range is varied enough to support clear and accurate reporting of statistical trends.
