Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the line graph well, successfully reporting data for both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. An overview is attempted in the introduction, noting the fluctuation of first-time visitors and the drastic increase in returning visitors. Key data points, such as the peak of approximately 15,000 returning visitors in 2006, are correctly highlighted and supported with figures from the graph. Comparisons are made between the two categories. However, the development of some data points is slightly repetitive in structure, and the overview could be more fully integrated. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a basic overall progression, beginning with an introduction, followed by separate body paragraphs for first-time and returning visitors. However, paragraphing is somewhat irregular and mechanical, and cohesive devices are frequently repetitive or awkward, such as 'Firstly', 'secondly', 'moreover', and 'furthermore'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with phrases like 'it were at 8000' where the antecedent is ambiguous. While the logical arrangement allows the reader to follow the main trends, the intrusive and limited use of cohesive devices prevents the response from achieving a higher band. This performance aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic numbers, trends, and time periods. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'fluctuated', 'drastically', and 'significantly'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'visitor' instead of 'visitors', 'an over all perspectives' instead of 'an overall perspective', and 'top number of visitor' instead of 'peak'. These inaccuracies reflect a limited range and occasional strain on the reader, matching the Band 5.0 level where vocabulary is minimally adequate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the response, including missing articles ('the line graph'), incorrect verb forms ('first time visitor ... visited'), run-on clauses linked improperly ('...in 2006 annd then it reached...'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('returning visitor were dropped down'). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader, though the overall meaning remains discernible. This profile corresponds closely to the Band 5.0 criteria for grammatical range and accuracy.
