The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph for the first time visitors shows high numbers at first then it reduced by time however after 2002, they increased linearly until they reach 12000 at 2008. for the returning time visitors , they had high increasing rate from 2000 to 2002 but this rate decreased until 2006. after 2006, the rate became negative from 2006 to 2008.
it seems that there was a trend at 2000 as there were many people visiting Caryl Island however this trend reduced by the time and back again after 2002.
In addition this Caryl Island might look very interesting as the returning visitors get higher and higher by time. however, it seems that after 6 years, the island gets old and need to update its infrastructure.
concluding this, even if there many interest of the people to place which is very attractive , we should keep updating it to maintain its good looking

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the line graph showing first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island, but it contains several significant misinterpretations of the data. For instance, the student states that first-time visitors 'reduced by time however after 2002, they increased linearly until they reach 12000 at 2008', which misreads the initial drop from 2000 to 2002 (8,000 to 4,000) and the final figure in 2008 (approximately 11,800). Furthermore, the response includes subjective speculation and personal commentary—such as arguing that 'the island gets old and need to update its infrastructure'—which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report where objectivity and data-reporting are required. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of accurate data reporting and the inclusion of irrelevant personal opinions limit the score to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text suffers from poor paragraphing and a lack of formal structure. The second and third paragraphs are lumped together into a single block without clear transitions, and the entire text lacks a proper introduction and overview. Cohesive devices are minimal or misused (e.g., lowercase letters at the start of sentences like 'it seems' and 'concluding this'). Although there is a basic chronological attempt to describe the trends, the progression of ideas is disjointed, and referencing between sentences is weak. This level of organization aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and restricted (e.g., 'high numbers', 'increased', 'rate', 'trend', 'people visiting'). There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'returning time visitors' instead of 'returning visitors', and awkward phrasing like 'the rate became negative'. Attempts at less common vocabulary are absent, and simple words are repeated frequently. Spelling and word choice errors cause some slight distraction, placing the response firmly at Band 5.0 for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex sentences often result in punctuation errors, run-on sentences, or grammatical faults (e.g., 'even if there many interest of the people to place which is very attractive , we should keep updating it'). There is a lack of capitalization at the beginning of sentences, and frequent errors in verb tense consistency and prepositions are apparent. These persistent errors impede smooth reading and reflect a Band 5.0 performance.
