Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. An overview is attempted in the final paragraph, capturing the general trajectory of both categories. However, there are some inaccuracies in reading the data from the graph; for instance, the student states that first-time visitors started at 8000 and that 2006 carried approx 8000, whereas the graph shows 2006 was actually around 9300. Additionally, some data points are slightly imprecise. Nevertheless, the main trends—such as the overall upward trajectory for both groups and the crossover in popularity—are correctly identified, placing the response at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The text is arranged into four paragraphs, following a logical structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs detailing the respective visitor types, and an overview conclusion. However, cohesion is often faulty or mechanical, relying on repetitive transitional phrases such as "After that" and "and after that" throughout the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used, but the overall flow is somewhat disrupted by frequent awkward transitions and punctuation errors, such as spaces before commas and periods. Referencing is generally clear, but the mechanical nature of the cohesive devices keeps this criterion at a Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating terms like "tourists," "visitors," "crowd," "peak point," and "trajectory" equivalents. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as "more crowded in 2004 of about 6000 of people" and "it will take some dedication," which is an unnatural expression for describing a downward trend. Spelling is generally acceptable, but phrasing is often repetitive and simplistic, utilizing words like "crowd" and "amount" rather than precise statistical terminology. This performance aligns with Band 5.5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures frequently contain errors. There are persistent tense inconsistencies, shifting awkwardly between present and future forms (e.g., "are starts from," "it will fall down," "it carries") when describing past historical data from 2000 to 2008. Punctuation is also weak, marked by unnecessary spaces before punctuation marks (e.g., "seen that , first time") and run-on structures joined by coordinating conjunctions without proper punctuation control. Frequent grammatical errors cause some distraction, but they do not completely impede communication, supporting a Band 5.0.
