Student answer (Band 5.5)

Caryl Island is an exquisite geographical landscape on Earth which has been a site to be visited once by everyone. For anyone to analyse the visit ratio of that island is look at the visitors graph which particularly talks about two categories of visitors; one being the first time visitors and the second are the returning visitors from 2000 to 2008.To start with the first timers the graph depicts that from 2000 to 2002 the first time visitors number declined from 8000 to 4000.However; post 2002 the number of first time visitors had an upward trajectory and convincingly the number increased each each year up until 2008 where it totalled at 12000 visitors. The returning vistors showed an unusual pattern on the graph where they increased aggresively from approximately 3000 to 10000 visitors from 2000 to 2002 and then the pace visitors ratio slowed little bit and increased at a normal pace up until 2006 where it reached approximately 15000 but after 2006 the number of returning visitors started to decline and fell below the range 14000 returning visiotrs. These two patterns have quite numerically depicted how often Cary islands turned out to be a tourist spot for people from acroos the globe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to address the prompt by describing the main trends in the line graph regarding first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. While an overview is attempted towards the end of the text, the response lacks a clear introductory overview paragraph highlighting the overall trends. Some data points are accurately reported, such as the drop in first-time visitors from 8000 to 4000 between 2000 and 2002, and the peak of returning visitors in 2006. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reading the precise values from the graph, and the formatting lacks standard paragraph breaks, which hinders the logical reporting of information. Overall, the task is addressed, but development and selection of key features could be more structured.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text suffers from a major structural flaw as it is written as one single block of text without proper paragraphing. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or awkwardly, such as 'To start with the first timers' and 'However; post 2002'. There are also punctuation issues where semicolons or periods are misplaced, which disrupts the flow and progression of ideas. Although logical relationships between some data points are attempted, the absence of clear paragraph breaks makes the arrangement difficult to follow. Therefore, coherence and cohesion fall into the lower-middle band due to poor formatting and mechanical referencing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common collocations and phrases such as 'exquisite geographical landscape', 'upward trajectory', and 'unusual pattern'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'vistors' instead of 'visitors', 'aggresively' instead of 'aggressively', 'visiotrs' instead of 'visitors', and 'acroos' instead of 'across'. Repetition of phrases like 'number of first time visitors' also limits lexical flexibility. While communication is not severely impeded, these vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies restrict the score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'For anyone to analyse the visit ratio of that island is look at the visitors graph...' and sentences containing relative clauses and conjunctions. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several structural errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing infinitives ('is look at'), run-on sentences, and punctuation errors (e.g., 'However;' followed by lowercase letters). Subject-verb agreement and prepositional use also show occasional lapses. Because errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and simple structures dominate despite attempts at complexity, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
