Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully reports the main features and trends of both visitor categories on Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. An overview is provided in the second sentence, noting the overall dominance and increase in returning visitors. Key data points, such as the starting figures of 8000 and 3000, the peak of over 15000 in 2006, and the end figures, are accurately cited and compared. However, there are minor numerical inaccuracies in the reading of intermediate points (e.g., stating returning visitors reached 10000 in 2002 when it is on the gridline, but the transcription has 10000; the general trends and comparisons are well covered). The response meets the task requirements well, earning a band score of 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph. Cohesive devices are used to signal contrast and sequence, such as 'Initially', 'Despite that', 'afterwards', and 'In contrast'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, although the body of the text is somewhat condensed into a single long paragraph. Progression is generally clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the comparison easily. Minor lapses in referencing and punctuation (such as a double period at the end of the second paragraph) occur, but overall organization is clear, supporting a band 6.5 or 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends and changes, employing words and phrases such as 'distingushing', 'surpassed', 'decreased dramatically', 'linearly', and 'plummented slightly'. There are several spelling and word-form errors, such as 'distingushing', 'started of', 'new comers', and 'plummented'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies and slight spelling issues, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the data effectively, fitting the criteria for a band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including dependent clauses ('Although the number of new visitors decreased...'). Control over grammar is generally acceptable, but there are notable errors such as missing articles ('in the Caryl Island'), incorrect prepositions ('started of'), and minor punctuation errors (double periods). Complex structures are attempted with varying success. While communication is not impeded, the frequency of these minor grammatical and mechanical errors prevents the score from reaching a higher band, placing it at a solid 6.0.
