Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by describing the trends for both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. However, the response contains several inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that returning visitors reached '12000' in 2004 when the graph shows around 12000, but then claims there were 'atleast 15000 visitors' in 2006 (the actual value is approximately 15200) and '13000 visitors' in 2008 (the actual value is 13400). Furthermore, the overview lacks a clear summary of the main overall trends, and the description of first-time visitors is brief and somewhat fragmented. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of precision and missing overall perspective place this at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into two primary paragraphs focusing on the two categories of visitors, which provides a basic structural framework. However, overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing, awkward transitions, and a lack of clear cohesive devices. Phrases like 'For instance in from 2000 to 2002 their was rise' and 'On the other hand' are overused and mechanically applied to link sentences. Paragraphing is rudimentary, and the abrupt shifts between data points make the text somewhat difficult to follow smoothly. Referencing is occasionally unclear, leading to a choppy reading experience that aligns with the Band 5 descriptor for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic vocabulary such as 'rise', 'increase', 'decrease', and 'visitors'. There are also persistent word choice and spelling errors, such as 'vistors', 'resturning', 'their' instead of 'there', and 'visiting visting'. Although the student attempts some numerical and directional descriptors, the vocabulary remains basic and insufficient for higher bands. The lexical errors and narrow range reflect a typical Band 5 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic present tense constructions with temporal prepositional phrases. There are frequent grammatical and structural errors throughout the text, including existential clause errors ('their was rise', 'there is decrease'), preposition errors ('between 2000 to 2008', 'decrease on visitors'), and spelling/typographical slips. Complex structures are attempted but are generally faulty or repetitive. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and firmly place the response at Band 5.0.
