Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the number of first-time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear that the number of returning visitors increased considerably over the given period, despite a slight fall after 2006. The number of first-time visitors, on the other hand, decreased at the beginning before rising steadily and reaching its highest point in 2008. Another noticeable feature is that returning visitors were higher than first-time visitors in most of the years.
Regarding first-time visitors, the figure stood at approximately 8,000 in 2000. It then decreased significantly to around 4,000 in 2002. After that, the number started to increase steadily, reaching about 6,000 in 2004 and roughly 9,000 in 2006. Finally, it rose further to approximately 12,000 in 2008, which was the highest figure recorded for first-time visitors during the period.
As for returning visitors, the number was considerably lower at the beginning, at around 3,000
in 2000. However, it increased sharply to approximately 10,000 in 2002. The figure continued to rise, although more gradually, reaching around 12,000 in 2004. It then climbed to its peak of approximately 15,000 in 2006. After this, the number declined slightly to about 13,500 in 2008. Despite this fall, returning visitors still remained higher than first-time visitors in the final year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and reporting the main trends and data points for both categories. The overview accurately highlights the overall trajectories of both first-time and returning visitors (e.g., 'the number of returning visitors increased considerably... while the number of first-time visitors... decreased at the beginning before rising steadily'). Key figures, such as the peak of 15,000 for returning visitors in 2006 and the final figures in 2008, are appropriately cited and compared. The response is fully grounded in the provided visual data and meets the requirements of a well-structured Academic Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Information and ideas are logically sequenced with a clear overall progression. The response is divided into logical paragraphs: an introduction, an overview paragraph, a detailed paragraph on first-time visitors, and a final paragraph focusing on returning visitors. Cohesive devices are used effectively and naturally, such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', 'Regarding first-time visitors', and 'As for returning visitors'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader smoothly through the various comparisons.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common functional items and collocations related to data trends. Examples include 'considerably over the given period', 'increased significantly', 'rose further', and 'declined slightly'. Word choices are precise, and there are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While it does not consistently reach the sophisticated level required for a Band 8, the lexical resource is strong and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing good control over grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex structures include subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'reaching its highest point in 2008' and 'Despite this fall, returning visitors still remained higher'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and any errors are minor and non-systematic. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, supporting overall clarity and readability.
