The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph gives information about visitors who visited the Caryl Island for the first time, and those who happened to come again after their initial visits to the Island between 2000 and 2008. There is a noticeable upward rise in the quantity of visitors for both the new and old ones. However, a decline was observed in the number of returning visitors from the end of 2006 to 2008.

Overall, there was a steady increase in the number of returning visitors until 2006 against first time visitors where there was a considerable decline till 2002 before the value rose steadily till 2008. Moreover, over the years, returning visitors maintained the greatest number of people who visited the Island over the latter with the exception for the year 2000, where first time visitors had the most number of visitors before finally dwindling.

With consideration to first time visitors, it was observed that the number of individuals who visited the Island was at the lowest number in the year 2002, which was 4000 people in number, when compared with the rest of the years. Meanwhile, the year 2008 received the most people who came to the Island as opposed to other years which was nearly below 12000 individuals when calculated.

While the returning visitors peaked the most in the year 2006 at a number which was slightly below 16000, the year 2000 witnessed the least number of people who stepped their feet into the Island at around 2000. The number continued rising till 2002, where 10000 number of individuals was recorded who visited the place, and fell shortly while maintaining a steady growth until finally depreciating in number in 2008 at a number slightly below 14000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting on both categories of visitors across the given time period. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the general upward trends and the relative dominance of returning visitors, with one specific exception. Key features are accurately reported and supported with appropriate data points, such as the peak for returning visitors in 2006 at nearly 16,000 and the low point for first-time visitors in 2002 at 4,000. While a few expressions regarding values are slightly wordy, the overall data interpretation is accurate and well-grounded in the provided graph, fully meeting the requirements for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by more detailed body paragraphs dedicated to each visitor type. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Meanwhile', 'While', and 'Moreover'. However, some referencing and transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as 'With consideration to first time visitors' and 'While the returning visitors peaked'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately throughout the response, ensuring a clear and coherent structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items and phrasing are attempted, such as 'upward rise', 'considerable decline', 'dwindling', and 'depreciating'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'quantity of visitors' (number of visitors is more natural), 'stepped their feet into' (visited or set foot on), and 'peaked the most' (peaked is sufficient). Despite these minor lexical infelicities, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly and effectively without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'while', 'where', and 'with the exception for'. Grammatical control is generally quite good, with numerous error-free sentences. However, there are a few minor errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'against first time visitors where there was a considerable decline' and 'the year 2000 witnessed the least number of people who stepped their feet into the Island at around 2000' (missing unit 'visitors'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled well overall, and these occasional errors do not impede communication.
